When this site was launched, forcing links across the divide was the focus. The opportunity to travel and work abroad helped transform the ‘06 version into more of a travel log. Now as ‘07 gets underway with son Chris leaving the US for a job in Japan, politics in an uproar and NRP starting a series “Crossing the Divide” the signs are clear that it is time to embrace the primary focus. With this short post, that process begins.

My son Chris joined me in Rome. When asked what one other country in Europe we should visit, he said “Norway” without much hesitation. So we traveled to the land of our ancestors.
After a late but light midnight touchdown at Oslo Airport we gathered ourselves for a train trip to Bergen where these pictures were taken.

As if re-tracing earlier steps, an extended stay in Rome marked a departure from Italy. Last time I was in the old forum looking up. This time I climbed the passage steps designed by Michelangelo and took in the few looking down. What was inside (Museo Capitolino) was breathtaking.

Back outside the evening view was sweeping.

… And in case I hadn’t really gotten the big picture of Roman history, their was a theater troupe to give their special interpretation!

Sicily is a big island, so in preparation for a final departure, we went small and traveled to Salina, one of the Eolian Islands.

Travel on the island made easy.

A friend whose ancestors came from southwest Sicily wanted to see pictures of the towns (Menfi and Santa Magharita) and their people.

It was three months earlier when I visited Segesta, to see one of the most dramatic settings for a Greek temple (or temple like structure). Agrigento is something quite different. A city with past and greatness that stretches back to its temples, set back on a bluff high above the sea.

After time spent in France (another story) and a return to the US I am back in Sicily. This time the residence is a definite change of pace.
I am at Orange Park, a TLA (Temporary Living Arrangement). This means full facilities and a country setting. Pictures follow and with time, more words to describe what is here.

I had an opportunity for a walking tour of the forum. It was a small group and the guide was a woman studying international law in Italy. I was browsing in my hotel room at the airport when I came upon their site (http://www.romanodyssey.com/tours_ancientcity.htm). Since it was a skype link away, I called. Within a few minutes I was set. All that was required was a cab dash from the airport to the historical park (the real expense of this adventure).
The following two links provide two Quicktime views to capture the experience.
First is a slide show.
Next is a panaorama scan.
